Video Description

In this video, Neil Tappin is joined by Golf Monthly rules expert Fergus Bisset to talk through the 5 golf rules that are surprisingly vague or unclear. Whether it’s determining if your ball is in a hazard, declaring a provisional or understanding what constitutes advice, there are actually quite a few grey areas in the rule book that you need to be careful of.

For the situation of standing on the path, wouldn't your nearest point of total relief from the path be further into the rough and not on the side closer to the fairway / hole, so this would not be an advantage ?

Is that why people smoke cigars while playing, to determining wind?

Golf monthly do a rules vide without mentioning the "say it's a provisional ball" rule challenge (impossible)

The thing to add about deciding on Known or Virtually Certain (KVC) is that 95% judgement depends on taking in all readily available information. That could be the terrain features, the trajectory of the ball and how much energy you estimate it had, whether you were looking into the sun, the testimony of any other competitors or spectators, the wind strength, etc. If taking all readily available information into account you believe you meet that 95% threshold, then you have KVC. (Note – not saying this needs to take a long time – just be cognizant you're considering all easily ascertainable factors)

Conclusion! Golf rules need rewriting and simplified… especially as stroke play & matchplay have different interpretations of the same rules… It's ridiculous…..

When taking a provisional ball, I thought you should tell your playing partners what ball you are using?

What would the rule be if we play a shot, know where it has gone, maybe just in the first cut and someone walks past and is suspected of picking up our ball?

Regarding rule #2: I heard that smoke from a cigar or cigarette is allowable under the rules. Is this true?

An interesting issue with stroke and distance, when you have not played a provisional, is that with golf courses as busy as they are it's almost impossible to do. By the time you have searched for your ball for your 3mins, the group behind you is now waiting for you to play and get out of their way from the spot you played your previous shot.

Does the advice rule count in match play situations too? What about showing a player what line to putt on?

So what about the famous Mickelson clip where he asks the young boy if he should go for the 3 wood shot, the boy says yes, Mickelson hits it and says the boy he can caddy for him anytime. Are we saying he should have got a penalty?😂

How about using my Apple Watch that tells me the wind direction?

So if somebody tells me not to hit it in the water or OB thats advise and they can be penalised?

In regards to rule 4, I’ve seen videos (not sure if on this channel) where the ball is on the cart path side of a tree stopping traditional swing so player flips the club to hit with their non-dominant hand so that there feet are on the cart path and they get a drop. From the description of rule 4, that is breaking the rule but the video swore that it was legal to do.

If you’re not in competition, play your own rules with your mates. It is much better !

NOTE, when you have video after video about the rules it should be clear we have a problem with the rule setting process. Join any weekend golf group and you will see confusion. KISS…keep it simple stupid!

Question: In the case of where you stuffed the 4 iron out of bounds from the impossible rough, where would you then take your penalty drop from? Back into that spot?

what's to stop a dodgy golfer from turning slope mode on/off during a round. Also as a smoker when wind blows my smoke around does that count as artificially testing wind direction

If you go back and hit from Tee , what shot would that be???

  26. @edvinengleson7530

My home course is a nine hole course that we often play twice so we get a ful round of 18 holes. Then the first and tenth holes are different, but also the same. Could you then ask either while teeing of on the first hole "What would you hit on the tenth?", or on the tenth, "what did you hit on the first hole?"?

2:08 Am I allowed to grab a club out of a bag to deceive them into hitting the wrong club and change the selection after my opponent’s shot?

This thing about telling someone what club you used being advice is pretty silly. That only makes sense if all clubs were the same and everybody hit those clubs the same distance as everyone else. It made more sense in the distant past before course yard markers were a thing but with yardage markers and now rangefinders and GPS, everybody knows the distance.
