That looks like some advice from a man that knows what he's talking about. I personally chunk at least one chip per every two rounds of golf. My problem however stems mostly from moving from one course's easily managed, less dense bermudagrass rough to the thick stuff I've experienced at Gus Wortham in Houston for example. The result was five strokes added to my scorecard number on the round.

You have identifed just about everything i do wrong with chipping. I will use you methods and improve my game. Many years ago you fixed my long chips lets see if you can fix my chips around the green. Thank you for this input

Love this. Sent it to a buddy because it pretty much summed up what I have been trying to tell him for a while. I also liked how you went down the strange rowing tangent. I have those "my meds wore off" moments a lot. Very relatable!!!! Hahahahaha Just joking man. Thanks for the great content.

The thing that held me back for years was not understanding the takeaway. I had clubpath so ingrained that it was killing my short game. I would take the club away inside even during chipping and it would result in bad results. When I started taking the club away more in line with the target (straight), my short game improved dramatically even though my weight and everything else was correct.

When I want to run the ball to the hole use a lower lofted club and put toe down and use a putting stroke. Works great! Hit it high you are going to cry. I do use your instructions from a year or two ago about open up the face and use the club bounce. That works for longer shots. Love the refresh and some tidbits I had forgotten. Well done.

I use a chipper when just off the green, in the fringe for example.
For aiming I choose a line and then hit to a small circle along that line, around an 18-inch diameter. So, it hits in the circle and rolls to the hole.

Your videos are a great learning tool. My game is improving, and I still suck at this game but I'm having fun. Keep up the good work with these great videos and maybe one day I'll break 90.

OK, I subbed. I've recently been bit by two things, The "golf bug" and a bad sciatica. Right now about all I can do without hurting myself more is small chip shots and putting. I've been watching your videos and practicing every day for the last 3 weeks, yesterday the golf ambassador told me "It looks like you're getting pretty good" It made me feel good, I was hitting a lot of shots within a few feet of the pin. My bad back may be a blessing, I am forced to only work on short shots right now.

53 years later my short game still sucks, but each time I watch another Mr SG video and go out and practice, I suck a little less. Keep ‘em coming. This content is my fuel.

Can you show us how to do it out of thick greenside rough? It’s much easier from the clean lie you’re demonstrating. Thank you!

I could putt it onto the green and toward the hole. Then whatever distance was left, double that and paint a giant circle around the pin. Then go back to the original spot I putted from, but this time chipping. I would not be able to chip it into that big circle. That's why I hate chipping.

PS. I am not doing any of the 5 things you listed here.

If I’m anywhere near the green, I use a putter. Works better for me than taking a guess at how long the ball will go with a chip and run.

When short-sided on a tight lie a few paces off the green, do you generally advise folks avoid toe-down (same as heel-up) with a slightly closed clubface?

Phil Mickelson is going to be disappointed that he's been doing it wrong all this time. I just saw 2:47 a video where he's chipping in close (20 yds) with the ball 6" behind his trail foot.

Great video. Subscribed. My biggest issue with chipping is keeping my hips quiet and using the shoulders only. I think I take the club back too far but when I shorten the back swing I tend to get jerky or yippy resulting in skulling the ball or chunks.

Anyway I have a chipping lesson booked with the club pro this weekend so he can assess my issues and help strategies. This tutorial was timely.

How to make something a lot of us struggle with easier to understand. That 3ft circle adjustment based on the lie of the green is something I will be using (don’t like downhill sliders) thanks MrSG!
