a bit of advice for beginners: I have switched to a bright colored ball instead of the traditional white. it has significantly reduced my loss rate.
I recall paying £100.00 for first full set of Donnay clubs, and managed to get down to 14 handicap with them, but having spent a small fortune since, can still only manage 8. If you think about it, even the worst off the shelf product is still way better than the old Persimmon clubs our forefathers played with.
I think if a player is brand new and still finding their swing I am not sure the ball is as important until they can find a modest semblance of consistent contact. At the beginner level keeping the game affordable and fun while encouraging/ motivating them to continue to improve is imperative.
A beginner should know this from the start. If you are slicing, you need offset, upright lie angles and weaker shafts. You may want a lower loft driver, then raise the loft with the adjustability sleeve to close the face. If you are duck hooking, you want the opposite. Minimal offset, flat lie angles and stiffer shafts. Buy a higher degree driver and deloft on the sleeve to open the face. Thicker grips also help reign in a heavy draw.
My beginner mistakes:
– Start with too cheap second hand golf clubs: I wanted something that feels higher quality, not expensive, but better than a "starter package set". So I replaced my cheaper clubs very early. Spending a bit more on second hand clubs is sometimes a better investment in the long run.
– Use 4-6 irons. My ball striking was not good enough. For me 7-PW is enough.
– Buy a 3 Hybrid. Loft was too low and the shaft was very long. I avoided using this club, as I didn't feel confident.
– Not always checking the lenght of the shaft before purchasing. I prefer regular or shorter lenght shafts.
My beginner wins:
– Start with better feeling wedges, that do not have a tour grind. Short game is great to practice.
– Buy a 5 hybrid. Very easy to launch. Now also added a 4 Hybrid and a 6 Hybrid. Great clubs.
– Buy a 5 wood. Very easy to launch into the fairway.
– Not buying an expensive Driver. I rather spend my money on a cheaper 3 Wood with higher loft and a shorter shaft. Still goes a long way.
Probably Don't get stiff shaft clubs if you are new.
