Video Description
Struggling to make consistent contact with your fairway woods and hybrids? You’re not alone — and you’re not doing anything drastically wrong. These are the longest clubs in your bag with the least amount of loft, so be easy on yourself. But there is something you can feel before every single shot that will transform how consistently you strike them.
Data from Shot Scope tells us that mid to high handicap golfers use fairway woods and hybrids 25% of the time. That’s a quarter of every round. Improve your consistency with these clubs and the effect on your score is enormous. In this fairway wood lesson I want to show you exactly what I showed my students John and Tom this week — two simple things that control everything about how your hybrid and fairway wood strikes the ground, delivers loft and gets the ball flying high and long.
The first is about controlling the depth of your arc — how the club interacts with the ground rather than where it lands. Get this right and the topping, the fatting and the inconsistent contact start to disappear almost immediately. The second is the prop drill — something I’ve shared before on the channel but which Tom was getting slightly wrong, and I want to make sure you’re doing it correctly because when it clicks it is genuinely a game changer for your fairway wood ball striking.

This fairway wood lesson works for all levels — whether you’re a beginner trying to understand why your hybrids and fairway woods feel so inconsistent, a mid-handicapper who tops or fats these clubs far too often, or someone who hits them well occasionally but can never repeat it. Given that you’re reaching for these clubs on a quarter of every hole you play, improving your fairway wood contact is one of the fastest ways to lower your scores without changing anything else in your game. Two simple feels. Consistent contact. More greens in two.
