YESSS!!! He should play. Because the clueless PGA of America is shooting themselves in the foot by their absurdly high ticket prices, which immediately changes the regular dynamic of the fan base at Bethpage; which is what makes the experience so unique at Bethpage. Keegan playing would be a BIG deal and incredibly exciting for the event, and bolster excitement more.

Can he? Yes. Should he? Absolutely NOT. Being a Ryder Cup Captain is a full time job. During the tournament the Captain needs to have a view of the entire event in every round. Player-Captains of the past include the likes of Palmer, Hagen and Hogan. He’s not nearly at that level nor consistent enough a player in his own right for me to believe he could successfully do both. He would have to simultaneously concentrate on his own match while evaluating and reevaluating match-ups for subsequent rounds. What demoralizing effect might his losing a match (or worse, multiple matches) have in the rest of the team? Second guessing would abound that he could have picked someone not burdened by the dual role.

If he's legitimately one of the top 12 US players come picking time, then yes. He doesn't need to helicopter the players during the event. He could remove all doubt by winning another tournament in the meantime.
