Video Description
In this video, short game guru Dan Grieve gives 25-handicap golfer Richard Baker a lesson on bunker shot basics. Richard really struggles to get out of the sand consistently, so was hoping that Dan could work his magic and give him some pointers that will ensure he can get out on the first attempt every time.
► We teamed up with adidas golf to create this video. Dan and Richard are wearing the Ultimate365 8.5 inch shorts from adidas to improve their shorts game. Get yours: https://www.adidas.co.uk/ultimate365-…

Thumbs off the grip has helped my yippy chipping. Old man’s golf gettin’ betta !
Dan, excellent video! Can you tell me where the ball is in his stance please?
It amazes me how so many people have played golf their whole lives with terrible fundamentals. For long game and short game, amateur players have no excuse for not having tour level alignment, setup, and grip. If you don’t master the fundamentals, there is really no point in playing the game.
Love it Dan. You should do more of these. His face is a picture when he gets out twice in a row!
This is how lessons should all be
Thank you for your great videos! One question to this one. At 4:53 it looks like your grip is really strong. Is this right and does it close the club face? Greetings Richard
Dan, what about ball position ? Not to much mentioned about that? Your thoughts please
"What can you feel is different?"
Such a simple question that has such a profound impact on teaching and retaining the feels from the lesson. Awesome
Smile on that guys face speaks volumes
This guy is the same handicap as me and struggles from the bunker as me. I’m downloading this video and keeping it on my phone to practice with. Dan is an absolute legend
I have no problem getting out of bunkers, distance control is the issue
I love the smile on his face.
He's a genius.
It seems so easy and after seeing dozens of these Dan lessons i have definitely improved …i dont have 3 shots out anymore(so far this last season 😬)…but still have zero practice Places in my area so my distance control is very lacking..usually really short on first of the day ,then really long then short then round is over lol….i wonder since its now winter like in the NE usa and beaches are empty …would going to a beach to practice this work like a bunker ?
13 HC and been following Dan for a couple of months now and, even though its horrible wet and muddy its transformed my inside 50 years, and frequently get 'great shot!' from playing partners as rarely outside of 10ft. Shame I can't putt lol
Fantastic video. I’m just getting back into golf and dread the bunkers and can never get out. I’ll be heading out tomorrow and practising these tips. Hopefully it works for me cos it will really improve my game and score
Since I discovered his videos, within a few rounds, I chipped in from the bunker twice in three rounds. One was a slam dunk from a very deep bunker with short side flag (all I could see was the top of the flag). My chipping and bunker play have become so much more consistent, reliable and I get the ball so much closer. I suggest his videos to so many people I play with.
Weight forward, lower hands, turn shoulders to target, keep face of the club facing you after finishing… am I missing anything???
Superb
Question: I had an instructor tell me that might right (trail) shoulder was too low on chip and pitch shots and he had me get more level. Dan is having this guy push his pelvis only toward the target, which promotes a lower trail shoulder. Is this something that one should do only in a bunker? Cuz his trail shoulder looks like he's setting up for driver. I would think you would want to shift everything together to get more weight on the lead side, v6ut not do it in a way that the trail shoulder drops so much.
Watching that authentic smile when someone gets that “ah Ha!” Moment on a shot that’s caused so much trouble….so cool. Great video
I am a scratch golfer, which made me terrible at bunkers since I don't go in them often. but this is an important golf skill and art worth mastering… and teaching.. this was an incredible lesson, this guy looked like a pro instantly with the changes.. magic! I can't wait to try this.. fyi: the bunkers are so counter intuitive to most golfers.. ur not hitting the ball, ur not shifting, ur not turning the clubface or hands over.. etc.. I wanna be like this student in the sand!! Hopefully understanding this will give me the insight for the fairway bunkers as well..
Can't understand 1 word he is saying
When he says to move the pelvis forward, does he mean toward the target (to the left) or move forward toward the ball?
I love this video and have watched it many times. Great content and tips. However I will often hit a low screamer to the right still (while feeling that I am implementing the tips here) – what is usually the cause of that?
What’s the ideal ball position ,forward , middle or back of stance
He is sooo happy
I did try this setup and swing and it got the ball out of the bunker , but unfortunately , I struck the ball first and it went very high and 20 yds over the green , down a hill and into the bushes (lost ball). Probably needed to dig down a bit into the sand with my feet.
I have watched this video a few times. I think I understand the set up. It’s the hands or the chest turning I am not getting right. Any suggestions.
I feel like I do what you told him but I either leave the ball in the bunker or just about get it over the top
I really need to get myself out there on the course bright and early try to be alone out there so i can practice out of the bunker …
So, you've teamed up with.. Radagast golf? Like from LotR? Sick.
Dans “holster” analogy is fantastic. Really promotes keeping the chest moving which will eliminate both heavy and thin strikes. Would highly recommend trying to “holster” the club with your irons/woods/driver on the range. Keeping the chest moving through the shot is critical.
I need to do that ..
Confess ive nicked Dans tips for my new golfer GF together with her just having a standard distance "get out" shot, now she gets out in 1 nearly every time, obviously i take all the credit!
Been playing 20 years and still cant get them out! 5th 1 hr lesson this week,,,, looking for the feel… not found it yet. And yes I do all that Dan suggests hmmm
Another great video. What degree of loft do you normally use for the sand ? Thank you.
Thank You Dan!!!
Until this year I could never get out of a bunker. I do not pay a lot of golf, but this year I have played more than ever before. I used the method you showed to Richard Baker in this video and I am seven for seven so far this year. I no longer fear the bunker which improves the overall game by not being afraid to shoot over bunkers for fear of ending up in the bunker.
I broke 100 for the first time in over 30 years yesterday and this bunker lesson was a big part of that victory for me.
Thanks Again,
TC
I always sucked in the bunker, similar what this guy did, gonna try this
👏👏👏👏
this is gold! I started golf 4 months ago, spent 3.5 months on the driver, full-swing iron shots etc and can now draw and fade pretty much at will. Filled with confidence, I decided to spend a bit of time on the short game. I suffered total humiliation and ego death! It's BY FAR the most technical and challenging aspect of the game, I feel. Checked YouTube for decent tuition…almost none and v. confusing. Then…I discovered "Dan the GOAT"! Bought the book, watched the videos over and over…there is literally noone that can touch your coaching Dan. Thank you so much! I'm still on a steep learning curve, but at least I now see a route to improving the consistency in my short game.
4:35 the way he just looks at Dan after making a good shot is awesome. 😂
Dan is so good!
