Rhythm in the Golf Swing : Key Tips for Swinging Smoothly with Power | Padraig Harrington

By: Padraig Harrington | Duration: 00:06:55

Video Description

In this episode of Paddy’s Golf Tips, Padraig explains the importance of having rhythm in the golf swing. Good rhythm allows the player to hit the ball hard, whilst swinging smoothly. Harrington emphasizes the significance of being relaxed at the top of the backswing and utilising a barely imperceptible pause, before turning on the power. He provides a couple of drills to help create rhythm, involving a stepping drill as well as counting during the swing, which is also useful when playing under pressure.

For me to find tempo, I take an 8 iron or PW and hit it 50% its stock distance. Hit about 30-50 of these per week. I don't ever try to swing very hard to hit my clubs 50% of their distances. Also, I struggle letting my right elbow drop into my body, before my right shoulder turns forward and thru the ball. My body wants to turn the shoulders so fast. I feel like rhythm to the slot position (club parallel to ground), then turn as hard and as fast as you can into that left hip.

I count off like dancing steps… "and 1, and 2"

The 1st "and" is the trigger, and the second "and" is the transition/pause at the top. This gives a dance rhythm to your swing

Love you paddy, grats on the tournament win. Please reduce the volume of the intro clip, it's several dbs above every other audio in the video. Shouldn't be too hard and I promise at least some % of people click off when they hear how loud it is.

Instead of counting I always say “Ernie” on the back swing (2 syllables) and “Ells” on the down swing (1 syllable) and because I say his name I naturally also have in my mind a picture of his swing while I’m swinging

I’m a pga coach and I’ve been fortunate to play and coach all over the world – so I’ve spent time with so many professional golfers and literally thousands of amateur golfers and Mr Harrington has a passion and an enthusiasm for golf which is absolutely amazing- And that’s the key to improving!! Congratulations on the US / British Open wins – Never in Doubt !!

As always, Paddy is correct. I make sure not to snatch or grip tightly at the top of the backswing. Let it fall and turn. It's effortless power feeling the weight of the clubhead through the ball.

Excellent video. I’d love to see a video on specifics of your approach to the target and visualization. Or any insights not involving swing mechanics and the body. Thank you for
    Making these for us.

I have stopped playing for over a year, and have strictly focused on trying to hit key checkpoints of the shaft shallowing instead of steepening in transition, tracking down mid bicep to down forearm, and my butt line staying back. I was working on it longer, but it was destroying me mentally on the course. I have tried everything. I still cant figure out what is the missing piece or the concept that I have wrong.
Hitting the ball relatively straight or curving it the way I want if given a couple chances isn’t the issue. I can manipulate the shaft to my forearm, and possibly lose my butt line to shallow it. It just saps power, is inconsistent, isnt efficient, and takes extra effort. Which gets worse as the clubs get longer.
    It is so frustrating/deflating.
The shaft plane simply doesn’t point at the ball on the way down. Especially, from the top.

Is it the camera angle or are you playing the ball off the right heel ?
