Hands and Arms Control The Clubface: Not the Hips and Torso | Padraig Harrington

By: Padraig Harrington | Duration: 00:07:50

Video Description

The clubface should be controlled with the hand and arms, not the hips and the torso. In the eighth Paddy’s Golf Tips video of a series about how you can teach yourself. I discuss how to actively use the hands, which also creates lag in the swing, and with the use of a stepping drill, I demonstrate how to hit a fade and a draw by releasing the hands.

Nowadays the tummy gets in the way a bit, so a fade is easier 😊

    Great work Paudie,

I went to the same schools as you, from Rathfarnham originally. I played mountains of pitch and putt as a young lad, and now that I'm trying to play actual golf I've realised it ruined me!

My grip, form, wrists are all over the place because I never hit the ball more than 70 yards. I really appreciate the videos! They've been a brilliant help!

Can you give some pointers on how to efficiently use your time practicing? How much time do you need to put in to improve? What proportion of your time should be spent off the tee Vs approach Vs putting?

The majority of club players cast the club early. Fact. Harrington is no doubt a fantastic player, but this is what is wrong with golf instruction, and why players are not getting better. The elite players don't truly understand how they do it. Club players doing this will simply cast it more and more.

What you fail to account for is most amateurs watching this use only their hands and arms and no body at all

As always challenging the norm and making golf way easier for the average golfer. Feeling more like the hurler golfer rather than the pure technical golfer 😂 The hurler golfer is a much lower handicap and happier golfer 🇮🇪

2 of my faults i could never get rid of no matter what i try. Early casting, too much left lateral in transition. I have now been following Ernest Jones and Manuel de la torre.

Swinging with the hands has retained some of the lag but still release slightly early, the best results i have gotten is feeling as if i dont even let the club set at the top to start back down with hands.
Manuels approach much the same except the forward swing is with arms instead, it seems i need to feel like i let the entire swing pause at the top and the weight tips before i swing with the arms. Need to video that swing now to see the results of lag retention.
But both methods have sorted out my shots to be way more consistent and less effort for an extra 5-10m distance with irons. Driver more so.

My son is highly skilled in physics. When he explains something to me, I get it. When he's gone away – I can't for the life of me work out what he meant or how gravity could just be the accelerating universe pushing up on us. The same is true for me as a poor golfer. I get it, thanks to Paddy. But then I don't again. BUT is it my imagination that in those sequential draw / fade shots his feet are in different positions? Left foot forward, left foot back. It's a complicated world.

Padraig, your videos and knowledge are great.

Would love a video of what the hands should be doing for the Driver. Particularly in closing the face.

What’s great about this instruction is that it’s encouraging amateur golfers to explore their golf swings. Try these things!!!! Explore what can work and how to hit different shots!!
Thats the fun part of golf!!

You're addressing the ball forward then back for draw and fade, respectively, and you're not showing us your shot shape to show that that's what you're getting as a shot shape. Your content would be better if you had another camera angle to show this, and if you openly explaining about the relationship of the ball forward or back in the stance.

This is what I see at Porzak Golf, firing your arms and hands keeping your back to your target! Glad to see consistency with the top players

I think a camera view from the rear would be a better angle for this video.

The rabbit hole of youtube golf lessons. So many so call professionals on youtube with how to improve your swing in 10 seconds and so on. Golfers can get quite lost. For me I need to know the person knows what their talking about and can play golf well. I know Padraig ticks those boxes.

I watch too many golf videos and I see a lot very conflicting info. Messes with my head. I trust Paddy because he truely believes what his saying. He doesn’t have to do this but is giving back. Thank you! Hope you come to Aussie one day. Cheers

Love the content, Paddy. Sort of narrowing down on “my” swing and finding I watch fewer swing tips from fewer instructors but I always wind up paying a lot of attention to what you have to say. It’s a tremendous help! Thanks again!

Paddy is to the point. He starts with hitting shots and tells us what he thinks is the right way. 8 minute video is all that is needed.

Love this. I had so many coaches tell me not to use my hands and I just had a huge push slice. I learned what "turning your hands over" meant through YouTube and all of a sudden I had a big draw 😂 I started feeling and using my hands and everything, including my short game, improved. I've kind of lost that feeling and the right miss is creeping back. You just gave me confidence to trust using my hands. Thank you!!!

Can you show overhead aerial view how hands work at impact and post impact with supination of left wrist?

  31. @cliffdirksen3332

The great instructor, Manuel de la Torre, preached a backswing controlled by the hands and the downswing controlled by the arms, but not the forearms! Your body will just follow naturally so you can forget trying to contort your body into specific positions during the swing, which is impossible for the recreational golfer.

The hands and wrists do more for you than the rest of the body combined… thank you Paddy for confirming this, wasted 20 good years clearing my hips to square the club!!
