In this lesson, you’ll discover how to set your wrists correctly in the takeaway to create effortless power, improve clubface control, and eliminate early swing mistakes. I’ll show you a simple wrist hinge drill that helps you find the perfect position for a smooth backswing, leading to more consistent ball-striking and added distance off the tee.

But that’s only half the battle – you also need to release the club properly through impact. I’ll walk you step-by-step through the correct “knuckles down” release technique that squares the clubface every time, controls both the lead and trail arms, and prevents the dreaded chicken wing. A proper release is the secret to straighter shots, improved accuracy, and consistent power.

Whether you’ve been struggling with timing, mishits, or just want to make your swing more efficient, this combined wrist hinge and release guide gives you the keys to a more repeatable and powerful golf swing. Dial in these two fundamentals today and start hitting the ball longer, straighter, and more consistently!

Why not just hinge square so you don't have to force the closure?

I started thinking about where you have the yellow alignment stick pointed. From your perspective would you say the yellow alignment stick points toward your instep, or the center of the inside of your leg. What do you think about pointing the butt of the club in that same direction as you make the hinge? If the left palm pushes down on the grip to create the up, and the right wrist hinges back to create the back, then equal pressure or force with both at the same time to get that ideal set?

I like to think the lead wrist works up and down like the pushing down on the butt of the club. The trail wrist works left to right. Blend those two together and you get the 45 angle. If you’re off one way or the other feel more in one wrist or the other. But after that, the wrist are basically done. From there turn to the top while maintaining width and club face control via a good grip and grip pressure. The downswing is not a stop and go move either. Right before the club reaches the top you need to feel like the weight is going back to the lead side. Even very slightly is enough. Like a step and throw move or throwing a ball. Lastly, if it doesn’t feel weird you aren’t making a change so feel weird for a while, think about it, and commit.

Golf is a funny game, working on this awareness of creating the “L” with the downwards hinge finally led me to elbow in front part of the swing and thanks to Porzak I tested true compression. Can’t count how many times I revisited videos on this channel that matched what I was working on at the time. Love from Virginia!

Do the same principles apply for driver and woods? From a hinge into the back swing and then release timing? I struggle with releasing driver as a tall golfer (6’8). I tend to pull my drives hard left and hook. I’ve been overcorrecting now and pushing right.

Great video! I had a question. I’m trying to focus on maintaining the wrist hinge. Shouldn’t I not move my wrists at all in the first few feet of bringing the club back? Should I actually feel myself hinging the wrist and turning at the same time? Thanks for the help!

Adam. When at the range. What clubs would you recommend we use for the set-go drill and just feeling “fast hands” and simple contact ? 8-9i?

The thing I have the most difficult time in the takeaway is when I try to get my “left shoulder across” then hinge with the right hand, it then makes it a very right hand dominant swing leading to hooks/pulls. I have tried the left hand pushing in the takeaway, right hinging, then left in the downswing with knuckles down approach but the consistency is off. What’s working best for me at the moment is feeling like my left hand does 100% of the work and it feels great with nice fades and good compression. However, the hinge is sometimes off and inconsistent.

What I’m trying to ask is what percentage of the hands should we feel working? Or am I totally missing the point and it should be 50/50 with the body moving the club? What do you personally feel Adam? TIA!

Here's a question I struggle to get answered, hoping Porzak can help! I can get the club to the set position but at half back, I'm very shallow. I believe it's a result of my body continuing to turn opposed to "going up the escalator". Does that make sense and do you have any drills to assist with that.
