So, we are looking at about 5-10% difference. If you are that good a player that the strikes you make are noticeable, you are a good enough player to adjust.
As for the rest of us business as usual.

I’m 67 years old so, losing distance from the golf ball rollback is not something I view favorably.

This is really quite interesting and will affect the older generation a lot more. I play a course with three tee options and the comps off the back tees already deter the older member from entering as the course is already to long. Making a change to the. Amateur game will only see this get worse.

    Looks like sound advice 😊

    Disregard my earlier comment please.

I’m a senior golfer. Hit my driver generally around 200 yards. Golf courses are not getting any shorter and the thought of hitting it even shorter is ludicrous 🤮

I'm sorry to say it sounds like the majority are being punished. Why don't we leave the golf ball alone and change the lofts on the pros club's to a more traditional loft. Also us duffer's don't have the time to spend in the gym, nutritionist's and all the resurch how to hit perfect stricks

Very bad idea, clubs will advance that will compensate. You cannot/should not try to stop progress. What if LIV ignore this as they are not PGA or R&A, it may encourage more golfers to go to LIV

absolute disgrace to outlaw the BILLIONS of golf balls already in circulation. Where do they want these dumped ?

  10. @wolfman180

A better idea would be for every tournament all the Players use the same ball. They could do a draw on a Monday morning and issue the pros a supply of balls for the week.
Leave amateurs alone as there aren't amateurs ripping up courses every week

Why does the rule for the very best of pro golfers have to apply to everyone? I'd also say that if you are a 10 hdcp or higher, playing a tour ball, might not be the correct choice to begin with. You probably don't have 120mph swing speed. That or it just means you hit it OB really far!

Get a series of can you get equipment tweaked to close the gap there especially with drivers.

  13. @robertcoleman6153

The optimum performance with modern technology only works for those players who have faster swing speed and compress the ball at impact. For the rest of us with swing speed in the 85 – 95mph range, there is very little gain with modern golf technology.

Fast forward to 2030….clubs lofts will be stronger…MOI will be higher…result Amatuers won't see a huge difference in today's distances…or next 4 years distances….I predict….for me…I will be retired from golf by then…so won't bother me….I'd like to see the PGA tour players etc loved 50 meters on driving distance so raw talent can come back into golf…Norman/Faldo days

Rollback is a joke. Just force PROs to use 15deg drivers not lower or put a rule for PROs that they literally roll back their ball on a course if they hit it over certain distance and problem is solved. Golf ball rollback and every year a new equipment comes that gives you extra yards – LOL. I wonder how many amateurs can afford to buy a brand new technology every year to overcome golf ball rollback?

I’m 53 now and not a massive hitter. So in 6 years my distance will be less plus the ball we make me even shorter then
Should just be for pro tour. Let the average club golfer play and enjoy best they can

It won’t make much difference. Clubs will move tees up therefore no need to keep lengthening courses

  18. @mattcoyle9239

Golf is hard enough for older golfers. If we lose 20 yards off the driver, we’re going to be hitting 2nd shot 3 woods into every par 4. And then sand wedge…

If a weekend golfer isn't playing with a top end golf ball I don't think they will see a difference. The PGA have already said there is a percentage of current balls that will still be conforming and I bet they are in the bags of a lot of weekend golfers that play for shits and giggles.

It's a stupid thing to rollback the golf ball. The present golf balls are already bound by the limits set by the governing bodies. It's because of advance in technology and understanding aerodynamics that manufacturers are able to make golf balls fly farther.

The roll back is not because new balls go further than historic balls but because modern golfers hitting the ball further than in the past. The overpowering of the course is largely an elite/pro problem but it is not solely a problem of the elite. Golf courses have not changed dramatically in the last 50-60 years (the timespan I have experience of) but the equipment has made the game so much easier. Changes in club heads (blades into peripheral weighted into cavity backs, into modern ‘hi-tech’ ) and major changes to shafts make it very much easier and straighter than in the 70s and 80s. GPS watches and range finders almost remove the need to look at the course…electronic info is so much more reliable than the human mind…no longer does course design manage to dupe and mislead. Carry and total distance no longer based on a poor, and exaggerating, memory……historic data is now readily to hand and is accurate…..and if that is not enough, sloe/‘plays as’ info is at and. Modern balls are so much more comfortable to play with than the old one piece, and go further than the old balata balls (was not fair to compare old ‘British’ sized ball with the larger (equivalent of the old “American “ ball).
Modern golf has been made so much easier in the last 50 years, so much so that very ordinary/poor players expect to par holes. Loss of a few yards will have negligible effect on most people’s round, except perhaps encouraging them to be able to play with all 14 clubs they carry.

If a roll back is really required then it should apply to all, pro and amateur alike! So fastest wat to do this is to roll back to the English standard size and a gallate ballade ball!,,

Biggest issue I saw with the driver was the higher spin, which was killing distance. Using a lower spin driver, and the club manufacturers know how to do this, will get some of the distance loss back, but not all of it. Looks like I’ll lose 1/2 a club and maybe 8-10 yards off the tee. I think it’s not as big of an issue as most people think it is.

  25. @stephenkoch5011

At the end of the day just hit higher lofted club to make the distance and may of the tee you won't slice it as much

I'd imagine there will be a rise in handicaps across the board when this comes in. Considering there is a direct correlation between distance off the tee and handicap?

The best solution would be to limit the longest club in the bag to 42 or 43 inches.

  29. @mattlittle2383

I don't care about the change. It's not like everyone will drip 50 yards. 5-10 yards isn't going to matter. Especially when the ball usually goes out of play anyway.

As an amateur I don't think this matters for me. It's not like I would have a much better score just because I hit it 5 yards further on a drive. I need to stop hitting it in the woods every 3rd hole. Also I don't even buy high end golf balls.

  33. @markjones6557

Without doubt one of the most stupid ideas ever. Firstly, courses don't need to be longer, they just need to be set up harder (for pros). Secondly, how's exactly do you roll back balls? Manufacturers will still try to eek every bit of distance out of whatever specs and parameters they are given. And let's for argument's sake they can roll it back and Rorys 340 yarders get rolled back to 300 yards…. The proportional drop off for an amateur will be horrendous. Like I say, leave the balls and other equipment alone, instead, in elite events, narrow fairways, lengthen rough, make greens smaller and faster.

I call BS on it. Another stupid USGA decision that hurts 99% of the golfers. I'll just carry on with my current balls and stock up before it takes effect as will most golfers.

The problem isn't the golf ball. It never has been. And it's nearly impossible to properly test an old golf ball. Everything a ball is made of, deteriorates over time. So, of course you're going to see a drop in performance. Add this to the higher spin rates of older balls, and you get less yardage. The problem is with clubs. I guarantee, if they rolled back the size of woods, you'd see a drop in yardage. Proof of that is every single test of old irons verse new ones. When properly compared, using the same length and loft (not just the number stamped on the club) you'll get nearly identical results. It's the woods where the difference in distance comes into play. If they insist on changing the golf ball, all they should do is change the spin rate. In fact, if you did this same test, comparing the Dunlop to a modern ball with a higher spin rate (comparable to the Dunlop) I'd be willing to bet they'd both perform the same. No offense, you every golf channel does the same thing with comparisons. You make it look like you're comparing apple with apples. But you leave out that not all apples are the same. If I bake an apple pie, using two different types of apples, you'll get two different tasting pies. The same goes with every ingredient. The point of all this is, it doesn't matter what they do to the ball, if the club manufactures come out with a club that overcomes the changes.

It's NOT the ball. Make the players play the same clubs we do, back up the lofts, and for the pros, narrow fairways.

Yes roll back the balls for the pros but leave the weekend/ club golfers the same. Surely manufacturers make all their money from the public so make it easy for us but limit the distance for the pros

  43. @djp411

A difference of "9 to 11 yards" at the "ELITE" level isn't going to change anything…. nothing. Oh wait… instead of a 220 yard 8 iron, they'll have to hit a 7? LOL that'll show em!! Instead of 380 they'll only hit it 370? HOW will they cope???? Big waste of time and money for no return.

    Reply
  44. @djp411

Put 8' deep bunkers all around the landing zone for the big hitters… risk = reward baby…. when they have to hit backwards or sideways out of enough steep walled bunkers, they'll hit short of them. And, btw…. WHATEVER is done, should only be done at the professional level, or maybe also at sanctioned amateur events. Make THEM buy special golf balls, while the rest of us use what we've been using. Thanks.

Killing or changing? 85 million people play the game worldwide. Not all of them drive par 4's in fact most pro's can't. Let the pro's go at it. It will be a chipping and putting competition for them. There is nothing wrong with that.

Hey, why not roll back woods, let’s go back to piddly headed drivers, let’s get rid of all the fancy varieties of putters and let’s just stick with PW and sand/iron. Ban hybrids !!
And henceforth ban any and all technology advancement to equipment
Crikey, why not go back to cane shafts
    It is just ridiculous

What if baseball manufacturers would make the ball fly 5 yards longer every year, should they stretch the fields to accommodate the longer distance, or should they keep the basic flying distance the same? I think it would be reasonable to roll back and not stretch fields every year.
