I have been playing for about 5 yrs, but i have not played for 6+ mo bc of knee replacement surgery. This video is a great tool for getting back out there. Thanks, Matt!

I like the idea of the chipping progression and limiting the clubs you take, but the reality is that a beginner is MORE likely to need a lofted club in their bag because they'll be missing the greens in worse positions more frequently.
If you're down in a rough covered deep collection basin off the green (sadly too common for me!) a 7i isn't getting you up that hill and stopping on the green without an absolutely magical touch.
So I think 'know your course' is an addendum to the 'what's in your bag' bit of advice. Or just keep a SW in there all the time, if only for bunker shots.

Couldn't agree more about getting some sort of launch monitor. Even if you can't do a skytrack, go look at something like the Rapsodo MLM. You can get pre-owned ones for less than $100 and they're fine for starting out. As a beginner you have NO idea how far you hit your clubs but once you start generating that data it becomes really easy to get closer on the course when combining that knowledge with a GPS app on your phone.
I also stole Ian Woosnam's idea and I write my distances on the back of my clubs in sharpie. Again, it simplifies things, which is great for a beginner.

May I get one of those indoor simulators my man? Would help a poor mans journey to better golf.

Mr SG – I hate you !! As 50+ year old who started playing 4 years ago, why didn’t you tell me this then 😂. Great tips for every level of golfer and another of your great videos. I recommend everyone to search your library for some absolute gold nuggets. Ps Rick who ? 😂.

Teaching beginners to use 7-9 irons to chip is very good, but i'm sorry, clipping ball first going down is terrible advice!

PLEASE PLAY FAST AND READY GOLF!!!!! If you cannot drive it 280+ and do not play from the back tees, then what makes you wait for the green to clear to hit onto the green? Lay up w/a smaller iron to keep the pace going. Also only 25% of pros make putts farther than 5 feet. So do not spend a long time reading your putts. You are not Arnold Palmer and you are not going to sink a 3 pointer, All you are doing is slowing down the pace of play…which SUCKS for us veteran golfers! Lag putt ok! Damn it slow players suck balls. Alcoholic golfer also suck. Drink afterwards if you cannot wait.

I love chipping with all my iorns. They all react a little different and knowing how they react leaves me with so many options in my chipping arsenal and my confidence to get it close, or in the hole, is always high. It's a great feeling.

I practice swinging inside all the time, not hitting balls but mainly just swing. I live in an apartment but its helped me a lot with wrist control and hinge

I became a 3 handicap in less than 2 years….and i did it on the cheap. If you're just starting out get a 7 iron, a pitching wedge, 3wood, and putter. Now, get a cheap bag on craigslist and you're ready to learn. The 1st thing you want to do is to get a driving range membership at a city golf course and practice with your clubs for about a month. In that time hopefully you made some friends…it's time to try and play. Start by playing from the forward tees and go have fun. As a beginner, never take more than two strokes over par on any given hole. After a month on the forward tees, move one set of tees back….stay there for a while. After 6 months, if you like the game, buy yourself a set of used clubs and continue to have fun.
Don't take lessons, don't go for club fittings, and definitely no alignment sticks….they're all gimmicks!
Lessons, fittings and top of the line equipment is for serious golfers looking to compete. If you just want to have fun and play good, you don't need anything except those things i mentioned.
This was how i started and at 67, i'm still a 4 handicap. Good luck.

i just started three months ago… so far the most difficult things for me seem to be, accelerating thru the ball and timing my legs just right to add power… just totday i started to get a decent feel at the range for getting the proper lag and accleration points and adding power with my legs… my accuracy got worse again but the swing actually started feeling a lot more effortless and natural… and a lot more powerful! im mostly talking about my driver… im pretty decent with wedges and short irons… i also hit hybrids pretty confidently now.. i hated them at first… lol

every time i go to the range (a few times a week) i do short game and putting area… chip them onto the practice green then putt into the hole… then i go to the actual driving range and hit a ton of chip shots with my various wedges and short irons…. then hit long irons and hybrids… then driver…. i took my three wood out of the bag as it didnt go any farther than my 3 hybrid and its dispersion is much much worse… at least with me hitting it…

i have a full set of clubs… the ones i actually use are
    Driver
    17.5 degree (delofted) 3 hybrid
    22.5 degree (overlofted) 4 hybrid
    5i
    7i
    9i
    PW 47degree
    GW 51degree
    SW 56 degree
    Putter (mallet)

Question I’m working on my irons and find that at address I look at a blade of grass in front of the ball I’m able to hit more down. Or should I look at the ball instead?

Another beginner tip: play some par 3 courses from time to time. The green fee is less, it’s less time consuming if time is a problem for you. And you can leave your woods and driver at home. You can focus on hitting irons and wedges

Fantastic practice routines. I do 2 other indoor, at-home drills. Putting: I bought a metal yardstick at the local home improvement store for $5. Lay it on a flat surface. Put a ball in the hole at one end. Practice putting the ball down the yardstick at different speeds (slower is harder). This develops face alignment. Chipping: I bought a dozen foam golf balls for $15 and picked up a sample piece of shag carpet from a local carpet store (most places give away or sell old samples). Chip 5, 10, 15 foot shots. The shag carpet really catches your club if you hit it fat. This develops strike – similar to your tape drill. PS – don't practice under the ceiling fan.
