The problem with this is the degree of injury is not factored in. Discomfort, even if extreme, shouldn't be enough to withdraw. If you're healthy enough to be jumping up and down celebrating like he was, you should have played. Not only does it invite the "was it strategy" discussion, but it also displays a significant lack of character. Part of being an athlete is playing through injury. Most golfers aren't athletes. Clearly Hovland is included with the latter.

If a player withdraws for any reason, you lose the full point. Easy solution

Viktor left it as late as he could, giving it a go on the range before finally calling his match off. The US gladly benefitted from the envelope rule in '91, so they can suck it up now.

Imagine if that happened in Tennis or any other sport. Who does that. So what happens if you’re out on the course and you dislocate your shoulder and you can’t go on. Hand shake and a tie. Craziness.

Nobody said anything about being shady, but you don’t play you don’t get any points. End of story. If you took your first swing, injured yourself, you don’t get 1/2 pt for starting. This isn’t a participation trophy…lolol

The biggest issue is the losing side—America—seeking to delegitimise the victory by the opposition—Europe—because of a rule they agreed to beforehand and which the last time used they benefited from. Seems like personal responsibility is as old fashioned as shame in America these days. When did American Exceptionalism become American Victimhood?

Why not just have an alternate? The Ryder Cup is supposed to be an exhibition that promotes the game of golf. Sportsmanship has been lost in too many areas of social events. Especially when the athletes (US) get paid the same win or lose. If the American players didn't like who the proceeds of the event were going to, just say that. I think Mark O'meara made a stink about this year's ago. There are a lot of volunteers who contribute to the events where these pros make their money. Completely spoiled and ungrateful. The epitome of the appelation "ugly American."

He was so injured it caused him to jump up and down on the18th while his team mates desperately tried to block him from the live camera feed. A simple solution would be for both teams to carry a 13th alternate who steps up and plays if one of the 12 can't go.

The euros cheated, and don't mind being labeled as such. Watching Viktor attempt to explain it is laughable. Just admit your captain is a coward and didn't want to risk losing to the Americans.
