When you defer to the second half you only get the option of kicking or receiving. You don’t get direction of endzone you want to receive from. You only get one option receiving or kicking and then the other team gets to pick which direction they want to kick

23:30 there are effectively four choices when you win a coin toss
1. Receive
2. Kick (differ)
3. Choose to defend home endzone for 1st quarter and 3rd quarter
4. choose to defend away endzone 1st quarter and 3rd quarter
When you choose to defend a particular endzone, the other team gets to choose kick or receive.
When you choose to kick or receive, the other team gets to pick which endzone to defend.
What FP is saying is:
if you are playing a team that likely wants the ball to begin with anyway (or vice versa), you choose which endzone you want to defend, and then the other team will likely make the choice you want them to make anyway.
What Jet is saying is:
Coaches driven by analytics have moved towards choosing to Kick (also known as differing) because you can try to get the final possession of the first half and then get the ball again at the beginning of the second half (Sort of like a two for one in basketball)
