These days, you always have to apologize internationally for being an American. There is very good reason for that. Actually, it's been true for decades on end now. Americans have been frowned upon internationally since at least the 1960s. I remember having to make a clear distinction between being Canadian…vs American…in Europe, back in 1971, when I was a kid.
