So many people are working on a huge backswing coil like Rory McIlroy. The thought is the more coil you get, the longer you’ll hit the ball.

As usual, I’m going to have to be the one to tell you that as much as you want to increase your shoulder coil like Rory, at least half of you can’t. This is due to eye dominance.

If you’re a right eye dominant playing golf right handed, and you try to coil more than 90 degrees, you can’t clearly see the golf ball. If you can’t see the ball, why would you coil like Rory?

Watch this tip to understand eye dominance and to try it so you can see exactly what I’m talking about. Once you know this, you’ll know how much you can coil so you’re not wasting your time trying to do something you can’t even do.

Finally! I'm right handed, left eye dominant and this is the first time it's ever been an advantage! It used to drive my shooting coaches crazy in both the Army and law enforcement when pistol training.

Not sure about his eye dominance, but Jack definitely rotated his head back to facilitate left eye focus on the ball and faciliate that coil. I am cross dominant left eye/right handed so this reinforces my need to coil more. Thanks again, Paul!!!

I’m left-handed and right-eye dominant, and it always served me well in baseball, since my stronger eye had a clear view of the pitcher from the left-handed batter’s box. For golf, I wasn’t aware opposite eye dominance had a potential advantage. I’ll have to try this next time I’m at the range or on the course. I don’t think I’ll be able to coil like Rory (I’m 69 and not as limber as I once was), but my nose shouldn’t get in the way.

I remember reading that 85% of tour players are opposite eye dominant.

How about a drill for same eye dominance where you close the dominant eye?

Its a really interesting topic and explains a lot. I know the head needs to move but does it turn ? So if eyes start parallel, do they then turn…But also I guess the head can be swivelled and eyes go to left of eye sockets. For righteye dominants maybe we at least need to learn to look out the corner of the eye to facilitate more rotation. thanks as ever!

super helpful! the counter side to this is if you're left eye dominant, when your head rotates too much before you hit the ball you'll lose sight of it. May be the origin of the tip to keep your head still over the ball, and why some people say you don't need to.

I think we need to talk more about this especially on putting.

I’m right eye dominant and I hit my straightest shots when I feel like my hands don’t go higher than my right shoulder

The old eye dominance theory re-appears. Got to love golf instruction!! Never disappoints with the nonsense. You probably need to do some stretching exercises and understand how the arms actually work moving up and down, less around and that the coil and turn of the body creates the bit of lateral motion required not your arms swinging across the body. They swing up and down. No eye dominance required.

Paul…you're killing me!!! I'm left-handed/play right-handed with a dominant left eye – no doubts there. I still have to really focus on my back-swing SLOWLY just to maximize it. I'm 70 years but reasonably fit…so no excuses. I WISH I could come up from AZ and just invest 3 days with you, LIVE. But ala$…..
